BEST HISTORIC OR HERITAGE
RESTORATION OR RENOVATION

Dr David Hurst qualified as a dentist in 2004 from Kings College London, UK. After working in private practice in the UK, David moved to Perth, WA in 2007. David practices all fields of general dentistry and has undertaken further training in the surgical placement of implants, root canal therapy, cosmetic dentistry, and orthodontics.

Throughout his dental career, David has embraced the technological aspect of contemporary dental practice to enhance and elevate traditional dental techniques. Digital dentistry offers the ability to work with patients on smile designs, smile reconstructions and makeovers and David’s skills in this area have resulted in a large and growing patient base.

In 2018, space became available at Raine Square, an iconic Perth site and David moved to secure a tenancy. Raine Square has long been a feature of Perth’s burgeoning CBD and it was undergoing a complete redevelopment, with restaurants, cafes, a cinema, and several high-profile international luxury labels. Council had a significant heritage classification on the original building which also flowed into aspects of the interiors inclusive of the arches which feature significantly in the project.

After researching the available options for practice design, David contacted Sam Koranis from Medifit and after initial meetings, engaged Medifit for the design and fitout of his new practice. David stated that Medifit stood out head & tales above their peers and had “the relevant experience with heritage buildings and dealing with large format developers. Partway through the redevelopment, one of the international brands requested the space that David had already committed to for their own store. The developers offered Dr Hurst a new location on the adjoining tenancy. With designs already well underway for the original tenancy, this presented significant challenges financially and in terms of the timelines for delivery.

Rather than viewing this as a setback, with the counsel of Medifit’s Sam Koranis, David and Sam were able to negotiate favourably on the lease and secured a stunning tenancy covering some 290smq. The extra 52 sqm of space come with no increase in the leasing dollars.

With the new tenancy now secured, designs were updated and the construction and fitout of what would become Perth Dental Rooms began in earnest. The design brief called for a minimalist yet elegant space with room for 5 chairs, a generous waiting and reception area, steri, lab, OPG, two offices, IT/Storeroom, and staff room.

The design solution is a timeless, stylish environment that brings joy to staff and patients. The reception area is in a position that is clear and visible for the arrival of patients new, and old to know they are in the right location. The finishes make a striking, elegant statement.

The colour palette is neutral and modern with the addition of warm timbers to complement the stunning heritage building. The timber flooring laid in herringbone style flows through all common areas of the practice for continuity and classic style. Soft LED strip lighting located under the reception counter and along the wall behind reception projects a subtle glow to highlight the finishes and lends a sophisticated feel to the space. Circular feature lighting provides a focal point above reception and ties it with the waiting room for a sense of connection between the two spaces. The waiting area is a space of clean classical lines, muted tones, and minimalism.

The circular pendant lights mirror those at reception ensuring continuity of styling. A carpet inset in the centre of the room adds a modern, homelike feel whilst improving acoustics and adding a softness under foot to increase the feel of relaxation. The original, heritage walls and arches are retained (as per heritage listing) to provide a sense of place and continue the ongoing story of the building. Strip lighting at ceiling level places a subtle spotlight on these character elements.

The journey from waiting room to consult room is transformed into a stunning space by retaining the original, heritage arches and lining them with a powder coated metal finish. This ensures the luxurious, modern aesthetic that has been established in reception and waiting room continues and makes the gorgeous almost century old arches the hero of the space. The final arch is filled with a bronzed mirror to open the space and provide a high-end feel. Slimline black framed glazing along the walls of the corridor provide a clean modern feature and accentuate the entries to each room. The main consult room is beautifully appointed with sleek modern white joinery highlighted with industrial brass fixtures echoing the history of the space. At the junction where the heritage windows meet the ergonomic worktops, a small feature has been created.

Again, the heritage exterior walls are maintained. Strip lighting along the ceiling creates a striking feature. Flooring is compliant for surgical applications whilst adding a neutral warm tone to the room. The end result is a beautiful practice befitting of its location and emulating the heritage aspects of the original building.

Summing up his experience with Medifit, David writes…

“The whole process, from my first conversation with Sam, to the design process, to finally my dealings with the Project Manager were beyond all expectations. All of the team have been supportive, guiding, helpful and caring. The end result is amazing. I cannot recommend this company enough. If and when I build another practice I would not bother looking elsewhere. Medifit are the real deal. All services under one umbrella. All accountability under one umbrella. They truly are the best team in Australia. I am happy for any potential clients to contact me or arrange a visit to my premises to see at face value the quality of their work. Thanks guys”

Medifit’s Sam Koranis adds

“We are very proud of what we’ve been able to achieve for David at Perth Dental Rooms. The Medifit team always go the extra yard to ensure that each of clients receive a bespoke offering that is unique to their brief as well as complimentary to the Buildings innate heritage characteristics. We wish to thank David for entrusting Medifit with his project and wish him and his team every success in the future”
