Dr George Connell and Dr Sheridan have worked together for over 10 years in Dr Sheridan’s Macquarie Street rooms. Both have attained post-graduate qualifications.

Dr Connell and Dr Sheridan provide surgical implant services for numerous private practices in both Sydney and regional areas. With a special interest in reconstructive and implant dentistry, they have completed over 1000 implant cases.

In 2013, the decision was taken to refurbish the Macquarie St. practice and after careful consideration of the available options Medifit were chosen to undertake the project.

Situated on the seventh floor of the signature British Medical Association building in the Sydney CBD, the location had been operating as a dental practice for almost 40 years and had undergone several transformations in that time. As a practice, Sydney Dental Surgeons offer the latest in dental treatments and technologies and this has now been reflected with a modern, contemporary design and fitout.

The 60m2 practice required a staged fit out with stage one including a redesign of the Entry, Reception and Waiting area, Steri, OPG and Staff room. As a working practice, the new fitout had to be completed with an absolute minimum of downtime. Once the design phase was completed, the entire fitout was completed in just 17 days from start to finish.

During this time, Dr Connell was able to temporarily operate from rooms on the floor above the surgery. Medifit was able to route the IT and telephony systems to the temporary rooms enabling the practice to trade while the work was completed.

The design brief called for a fresh, light environment with clean lines and modern finishes consistent with a cutting edge specialist dental practice. White interior walls are contrasted with timber laminates and darker carpet tones to deliver a modern, yet warm and inviting interior, while reflective surfaces throughout add visual highlights and help the space present larger than it really is.

The location features stunning views over Sydney and the Harbour and the design of the space seeks to make the most of this natural attribute. The practice logo features the signature curved sails of the Sydney Opera House and these curves are replicated throughout the design. Multi pane bay windows looking out across the harbour have been retained in the waiting room, providing a link to the building’s history and delivering an abundance of natural light. The curve of the bay window is echoed throughout the entry and reception area, with curved steps leading from reception up into the comfortable waiting area, and curved bulkheads above the reception counter provide continuity and help define the area.

A wall in the reception area provides internal signage options while doubling as a discretely integrated full height storage unit offering plenty of room for storage and filing without compromising the visual integrity of the space. Structural columns and an existing heater unit have been cleverly disguised with the addition of a magazine rack and a small storage area for children’s toys.

Staff and steri areas are defined by a subtle shift in tone to soft greys and blues. Storage has been maximised with the addition of full height lockers and storage provision under the bench seating.

As patients enter the practice, glimpses of the incredible view are reflected in the full height mirror while the panelled walls lead them naturally to the curved reception counter before stepping up into the waiting area. The elegant lines and combination of surfaces and chrome highlights work effortlessly to create an ambience of calm confidence.

The overall effect is stunning and testament to the styles and personal tastes of Dr Connell and the ability of the Medifit design and fit out team to bring his vision to fruition.

Medifit’s Sam Koranis adds “Sydney Dental Surgeons represents an example of what can be achieved in even tight timeframes when experienced professionals combine their talents and focus on the end goal. Medifit are justifiably proud of the result at Sydney Dental Surgeons and look forward to working with Dr Connell again.”
